I really admire your website and the many areas and activities you write about.
It appears you may have some affinity or affiliation with iUniverse Publisher and I’m sure they are a fine organization. . .
Recently, I’ve prepared some.. ..booklets. . . two have been basically reprints of 125 year old articles. . . .one on Buffalo Soldiers another on the beginning rules of football. . .and I’ve a couple more cooking. . .
The point is I’ve been using http://www.thebookpatch.com . . . and they have it seems to me two strengths. . . Price and a willingness to print literally one book at a time.
I priced your book the King’s Ransom and Lost King.
your size is 5 1/4 x8″ . . . .and that is likely going to be a bit more costly than the size I’m using 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 . . .actually, in terms of efficiency the 8 1/2 x 11 size is probably best. . . they do perfect binding or spiral. . .and the cover and back seem to be the same as what you have on your books or at least very similar. . . .With a Color Cover and Back Cover with black and white inside. . . a 267 page book 8 1/2 x 11 would cost $7.12 . . . .if you ordered just one. .. .with volume the price does diminish. . . . .the Lost King with 223 pages is $6.11
Now, as an example my Buffalo Soldier is only 8 1/2 x 11″ for 20 of the booklet of 14 pages . . . .the cost with shipping for 20 was $46.00. . . .It took about 10 days to receive.
Since they do only one. . . .it is easy to get a proof. . . at incredibly modest cost.
Quality and service seem to be fine. . . .plus twice I had a question. . . . called and left my number and a few hours later a real person contacted me and walked me thru my problem.
Later today I’ll be ordering about a 40 page book Perfect binding 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 and my cost will be. . .a little over $2. they charge about $1.50 for handling and I’ll probably use Priority Mail which costs $6. . .first class would be $2ish.
So I’ll get a proof copy for about $10. . . . make my adjustments and order a number to try and sell. Total publishing cost for 20 or 25 books. . . roughly $60. . . . seems like a deal.
It seems a neat way to publish your own effort with modest cost. . . and of course receive only a few books. . . .I think ISBN thru them is $25. . . My offerings are primarily via EBAY and I’ve not bothered . . . I’ll have to decide on the current one of 40 pages. .Just uncertain.
btw. . I’m the husband of Mary Rose and sitting here in the Art Center serving as a temporary assistant volunteer. . .a sub when Mary can’t get anyone else. . .and as you can see idle fingers just can’t resist talking. . . .
Thanks for your comments. We don’t actually have an relationship at all with iUniverse. Some years ago we edited several novels for an author who worked with iUniverse. We used createspace for “The Lost King” and “The King’s Ransom” as well as two nonfiction titles. The nonfiction titles are 8.5″ x 11″. We’ve been pleased with the process and the results and find createspace support to be helpful and available when we need it.
