6th Annual Port Aransas Art Fest

The third Saturday and Sunday in May, the courtyard at the Tarpon Inn, 200 East Cotter Avenue in Port Aransas, was the site of a festival for the five senses. The 6th Annual ArtFest ran from 10 .am. to 5 p.m. both days and featured 30 artists from Texas and beyond.

It was great to see Donna Warner and her paintings of coastal flora and fauna. Diane Weiner was back with her jewelry inspired by master painters like Van Gogh and Monet. New were earrings and necklaces that featured the exuberant orange and black of Georgia O’Keefe’s “Poppies.”

Brenda Barnett, one of the Potters on Cotter, had her jewelry and ceramics. The pastel glaze on her pieces seemed just right for Spring.

Gary Hansen brought his photographs, printed on canvas or fine art paper. Through his various views one could tour through the Lydia Ann Lighthouse which is not open to the public. He described the process he uses to make each print unique and deserving of a number.

Beverly Charles was there signing copies of her recently published book, How I Discovered My Mother Was a Goddess, a story of aging and dementia from the viewpoint of both the parent and the child.

So much for the “feast for the eyes.” But there were delights for the senses of hearing, taste and touch, too. Tiddle Caylor and friends, who often provide the musical entertainment on First Fridays at the Art Center for the Islands, held down the deck in front of Roosevelt’s and kept the live music coming. The tantalizing aroma of grilled meat wafted across the courtyard, beckoning visitors to check out the snack bar. For the taste buds, popcorn, snacks and beverages were available. A youth activity area gave the younger art lovers a chance to flex their artistic muscles.
